LABEL

RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Recommendation

Identify name(s) of interested Councilmember(s) to be considered by the Napa County City Selection Committee as nominees to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).

Body

DISCUSSION:

The MTC was created as a local area planning agency providing comprehensive regional transportation planning for the region comprised of the City and County of San Francisco and the Counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma.  The commission develops regional transit service objectives, performance measures of efficiency and effectiveness, specifies uniform data requirements to assess public transit service benefits and costs, and establishes procedures for regional transportation priorities.

The commission consists of 21 members; the County of Napa is allocated one member.  Napa County jurisdictions are invited to submit names of individuals from their respective legislative bodies that may wish to be considered.  Names are submitted to the Napa County City Selection Committee, which nominates three individuals from names submitted.   Nominee names are then submitted to the Napa County Board of Supervisors for final consideration and appointment.

The current term of Napa County’s representative on MTC, Supervisor Alfredo Pedroza, is slated to expire on February 9, 2027, however his term as Supervisor will end in January 2025.  The Napa County City Selection Committee will hold a future meeting, likely in mid-January of 2025, to nominate the names of three individuals to submit to the Napa County Board of Supervisors for final consideration and appointment to fill the vacancy for the unexpired term.

Per Government Code Section 66504, MTC commissioners “shall be selected for their special familiarity with the problems and issues in the field of transportation.”
