Recognize June 19th as the Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Body

DISCUSSION:

On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill establishing Juneteenth (June 19th), the date commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, as a federal holiday. Officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, the holiday became the twelfth federal public holiday and the first one established since Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday was recognized in 1983.

Today’s proclamation will further express the City’s recognition of Juneteenth as a day of reflection and remembrance and an opportunity to truthfully learn about and acknowledge this period in our history, seek to understand the experience of others, and commit to significant and lasting improvements in the City of Napa and in the United States.

Members of the community are invited to celebrate Juneteenth at the Oxbow Commons from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on June 19, 2023. This will be an opportunity to learn, appreciate and celebrate Juneteenth over food, music, and art.
